Matchplay results report May 2012 for Singles

Bush/West (7&6)
We finished our match play round exactly on the deadline. Woo! It was not easy.
On a windy, blustering day, Bill and Alastair set off in GC Brunn for our match. The most emphatic point about our game is that we struggled against a 1-2 club wind on the first nine and a 3-4 club wind on the back nine. When the wind was helping it was great. Alastair, on the last hole came tenaciously close to driving the green side bunker. He finished par, par. This is the good news. Struggling against the wind and a rusty game, Alastair was four down at the turn and Bill won 7/6 on the twelfth.

P. Gazzola Vs. Ray Norris (4&3)

On 9 May, Wednesday afternoon , at Sussenburnn, Pari’s home club
Luck was already on Pari’s side as Ray had to give Pari 6 stokes!!!  Pari took the opening hole, managed to square at the 2nd hole and took the 3rd; Ray got it back at the 4th. By the 7th Ray managed to square the match. From the 8th to 12, it was up and down for both of us, but Pari was still one up. Then from 13th to 15th Ray started to have bad luck on the chipping and putting and Pari managed to make fewer mistakes than Ray. At the end, we had a good time and thanked to Maurizio for spending time with us. Good luck to Ray for the consolation round.

P. Gazzola Vs. G. Appelgren (3&2)

On Sunday 20 May, at GA’s home club, Schoenfeld. Despite the lower handicap index, PG managed to get 2 stokes from GA- - sorry :-) PG started very well, made a par at the first hole (par 5) and took a lead at the first 4 holes, meanwhile GA was a bit unsettled with his swing. GA managed to get the 5th hole and squared on the 6th.  PG managed to make par at the 7th and used the given stoke on the 8th  -  so 5-up to PG  From the 9th to 11th, GA managed to get his swing back. PG was a bit nervous but managed to get back on the 12th, GA fought back on the 13th. At 14th, we managed to square the hole, PG took the 15th – 3 up with 3 holes to play. The match was decided here….par 3 at the 16th – to stay in the match, GA needed to win the hole; PG needed to at least square the hole and win the match….

GA hit the ball and landed on the left, meanwhile PG’s ball landed on the right!!! GA chipped it very well; PG chipped too short. PG had to put from outside the green and of course it was too long...the ball kept rolling and stopped 6 feet from the hole. GA managed to put nicely and the ball stopped at 2 feet from the hole. So bogey for GA. To close the match PG needed to sink the putt…and of course…she did it…

Even though, the match was over...PG still played well….got par at 17th (par 4) and birdie at the 18th (par4)!!!! PG was very happy as Maurizio, her dear and loving husband, will be the next target in the third round!!!

Here we come “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” …well… kind of…

P. Zachry Vs. Anne Petri (6&5)

Anne and I played yesterday afternoon at GC Brunn. Turned out to be a beautiful afternoon with some very pleasant company (we were joined by Richard and Fatima ).
The new handicapping system was calculated and resulted in Anne receiving 14 strokes. Anne was able to leverage a number of her strokes to win some holes and even win some of the holes where no strokes were given.
In the end it was not enough though as Zachry closed out the match 6 & 5.
It was a good solid effort in Anne's first year of singles match play and I wish her luck for next year.
