Please find below the results and a short write-up of the doubles match Goeran Appelgren /John Fennessy (GJ) v. Timothy Lemay/Jae Sung LEE (TJ) at GC Schoenfeld on 29 April 2012.
The
forecasted high for the day was the highest for the year and the
ferocious winds at the golf course in Marchfeld, famous for its
asparagus, didn’t give much relief to the players. Both teams struggled
on # 1 (par 5) with triple bogeys. GJ’s double bogey on #2 was enough
to give them the lead, yet TJ came back with a bogey on #3. # 4 (par 5)
was a challenge for both teams as both suffered triple bogeys. TJ’s par
on the short #5 (par 4) gave them their first lead, which continued as
#6 was halved. The wind really became a factor on #7 as the players had
to fight against the wind. A bogey gave TJ a two-hole lead. 3 of the 4
balls found the woods on # 8 instead of the small passage leading to
the green. A solid bunker shot by TJ made it 3 up. GJ’s straight drive
and solid approach to the front of the green looked more promising than
TJ’s drive which ended up out of bounds and the second shot of the
other drive which found the #10 tee box. But a long putt from the edge
of the green gave TJ a 4-hole lead.
Heading into the
second half, TJ was able to extend the lead to five combining a nice
drive and some solid short game. Playing against the wind on #11 and #
12, both teams struggled halving both holes. On the rather short yet
critical # 13, all four drives headed into the woods on the right. It
was fortunate for TJ, as one of their balls went over the woods while
both GJ’s balls were deeply in the woods. TJ’ second shot found the
green and a long birdie putt (first of the day) gave TJ the victory
(6&5).
