Matchplay results report April 2012 for Singles

Here are the results and a short write-up of the Jean-Fred Feuz (13.6) v. Jae Sung Lee(27.2) match at Himberg Colony Club Gutenhof (West Course) on 22 April 2012.

Contrary to the forecast for rain showers, the players were happy to see the sun shining. JFF led the match with a bogey on #1 and a par on #2 while JSL struggled with two consecutive +4s. JSL continued to struggle with +4 on #3 but was lucky that JFF's ball found the woods on the right. With a lucky birdie, JSL made it AS on #4. Nonetheless, JFF took the lead again with a bogey on #5. With the sun gone, the players had to change from their sunglasses to normal glasses. The three holes thereafter were halved, two (#7 and #8) of which were thanks to strokes that JSL got from JFF. On #9, JSL made par making it AS heading into the back nine.

Having found the water on #10, JSL should have been trailing but found himself 1UP when JFF struggled with the short game. JSL's par on #11 and JFF's par on #12 were certainly the better parts of the game. On #13 with the big water hazard right before the green, JSL's decision to take a detour paid off when JFF's ball found the water; JSL's bogey made it 2 UP. Somewhat reckless pitch over the bunkers allowed JSL a par on #13, making it 3 UP. While JSL's shot on par 3 #14 found the green on the far opposite side, JFF's shots found the water and again the rocks giving JSL a lucky victory (4&3). The two players continued a friendly match, but the sky wasn't happy, starting to cry heavily over JFF's loss.

Brunn, Saturday 28 April - Behrouz Shahandeh won the last two holes earning a hard-fought victory against Jerry Carter one-up. Behrouz had lost the 16th hole to go down one but hit back on the last two holes getting on in regulation and two-putting for pars to take the match. Neither player was ever more than one-hole up throughout the entire match with the lead changing hands several times. The see-saw match was played in a truly friendly atmosphere with both players producing quality shots in spite of the windy and warm conditions.

Kelly/Petri won 2UP vs. West/Wiggins in GCC Brunn on 29 April 2012

It was a fun match, fabulous weather, but W&W had to give K&P 10 strokes, which they appreciated and used!  The Master, Jerry Carter, had a walk around with us, to caddie and help guide the “newbies.”
K&P started strong on the front nine, with 3UP, but then W&W got into the swing of things on the back nine and gave K&P a real run for their money, with 1UP, shortening the lead to only 2UP.

West’s Tee Shots were out of this world, with Wiggins following strong!  Kelly and Petri were consistent and had some beautiful fairway shots, only reducing to a one ball play twice.

A great day and fun to play with Alistair and Margaret!
