Matchplay results report July 2012 for Singles

K. Entekhabi Vs G. Dupuy (2&1)
Kourosh Entekhabi and I played our singles match on Friday in the hot sun at GC Sussenbrunn. Kourosh made it interesting with a couple Tom Watsons toward the end, but he basically dominated – I think he fired a net 66, including his first birdie – to take the match 2 and 1. Congrats Kourosh and thanks for a fun evening!

B. Shahandeh vs J. Hopponen (3&2)
Brunn, Saturday 30 June - Behrouz parred the 16th hole to record a 3&2 victory against Jody on a scorching hot day with temperatures reaching 35 degrees.
Jody had started strongly going two-up by winning the first two holes. Behrouz pulled one back with a par on the third. The match then went into a tight phase as the two players matched each other's scores and thus the score remained one-up for Jody until the eighth hole. Notable was Jody's bogey on the seventh as from a most difficult position, he threaded a superb second shot to the centre of the fairway which subsequently enabled him to half the hole.

However, Behrouz, playing steady golf, capitalized on a mini-slump by Jody to surge ahead going two-up by winning the 8th, 9th and the 10th holes. After halving the next two holes, Behrouz increased his lead to three by winning the 13th. But Jody struck back immediately winning the 14th. The par-three 15th was halved and the match moved to the par-four 16th. Jody produced another miraculous stroke as his second shot from among the trees ended up only two metres from the green giving him a chance to extend the match. Behrouz had, in the meantime, reached the green in two with a smooth 8-iron after a long drive which had split the fairway. But Jody's usually reliable touch around the green deserted him as he could only manage a bogey. Behrouz's two-put par was thus good enough to seal the win 3&2 after a spectacular display of very steady golf my the "Meister" himself (e.g. 16 of 18 drives were on or close to the short grass, or on or near the green on the par 3s).

The match was played in a friendly, competitive and enjoyable atmosphere in spite of the heat. The beers sure tasted good at the 19th hole.

B. Bush vs P. Zhachry
Pete and Bill started their match at GC Brunn on a hot, very hot Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, they had a bit of breeze to ease the scorching rays of the sun. Pete had a slow start allowing Bill to go to up after two, but Pete fought back to be one up after eight. The match went all square at the turn. They were all square after twelve, the match being fought equally well by the sweating players. They were also all square on girlies. Pete took advantage of Bill’s girlie to go one up after thirteen.  On fourteen while putting in a hail storm (yes the weather took a turn for the worse) Bill missed a short put allowing Pete to go two up with four to play. Pete and Bill stood in pouring, torrential rain for fifteen minutes before teeing of on fifteen. Unfortunately, Pete left his umbrella in the car and struggled to keep his grips and hands dry. The result was Pete’s grip twisted as he swung resulting in duck hooks and power slices. Bill took advantage having dry gloves and grips to win two up. Commiserations to Pete for having left a dry umbrella in the car. Of course, we both birdied the nineteenth several times
