Matchplay results report July 2012 for Consolation Singles Matchplay

R Norris Vs A.L Petri (2&1)
Anne-Louise and I played our match yesterday at Brunn. Great match - Anne-Louise
played like a tiger and we were all square after 15. Then she sprayed a few shots
on 16 and 17 and I was able to squeeze through, 2-1.
This is intoxicating: is Tiger in my bracket ?

F.Huel Vs J.F. Feuz (5&4)
Last Sunday we’ve had a tough game which ended in my favour 5 up 4 2go. It was the hottest golf game I ever had – 37 Celsius…… brrrrrrrrrrrr…
However, the Himbergers seem to have problems with Süssenbrunn – is a long, long course without shadow (smile).

N. Tyley/R.Berg Vs K. Entekhabi/S. Sturm (3&1)
after playing the round in Spillern we ended up square but Neil had to leave on duty travel so we decided to go back another time to Süssenbrunn and play 9 holes and afterwards sudden death! Friday, 15.6., we went out at beautiful weather(in comparison to the other rounds before!) and were fighting  back and for - square, 1 up, 2up, 1 down...sorry for my poore English, by time I will also get used to this.... and decided the game on hole number 8 - 3up and 1 hole to go! We had a fun round and enjoyed our cool drinks afterwards in the club house, thanks to Neil who had a girlie on the first hole .....

G. Dupuy/A. Reepmayer Vs J. Carter/P. Gazzola (2&1)
Team AReepmeyer/GDupuy faced off against team PGazzola/JCarter for a balmy twilight match at GC Spillern last night. In spite of Gazzola/Carter working the match to all square at the turn and Pari’s draining a 50m birdie putt on 15 to get to within 1, Reepmeyer/Dupuy managed to hang on with a timely mix of par and net par saves on the back to ultimately take the match 2-and-1. It was nearly 9pm by the finish so we had to postpone the 19th this time, but I’ve got next rounds. Tight match and lots of fun, thanks everybody.

V. Guenwald/P Zachry Vs Norris/Norris (5&4)
The match took place at Schoenfeld on a balmy Wednesday afternoon. The team of Norris /Norris was all business from the start. Zachry/Gruenwald took an early lead, but the Norris team never gave in and continued to win or push holes frequent enough to  make the outcome unpredictable. It was not until Zachry/Gruenwald gained some momentum on a run of holes in the back 9 that the likely outcome became predictable. Still,  the Norris team fought hard, hitting some beautiful golf shots and fighting till the end. Zachry/Gruenwald eventually closed out the match 5&4 at approximately 20:15 in the evening. Hats off to both teams for their competitive spirit, golf etiquette and good play.

David Hatt & David Jenkins Vs Tim LeMay & Jae Sung Lee – one up
Süssenbrunn, Tuesday, 19 June 2012
Fight in the Twilight“
Problems in finding date on which all parties could come together threatened to consign this match to the dreaded coin toss.  Eventually, however, it was agreed the match could take place on 19 June, at Süssenbrunn, at 18,30, to be played over 12 holes.

The handicap differential gave the Davids a stroke on the first and eighth holes and things looked bad for them when they promptly lost the first.  They recovered, however, well enough to make the match all square at the turn.

Light was fading fast as the two pairs set off to play the last 3 holes.  The 10th was halved and by this time it was, for once, not only David J. who had problems on seeing the ball.  The Davids managed to win the 11th and there was much speculation as to what would happen if the match ended all square (to play on for a “sudden death” finish would have been impossible in these light conditions).

The 12th was halved, however, thus resulting in a win for the Davids and sparing the match organizers from the headache of deciding what to do had the match been tied.  (They may wish to consider how such cases should be handled if they arise in future.)

Many thanks, Tim and Jae, for a most enjoyable round and a very closely fought match.

K. Entekhabi Vs G. Dupuy (2&1)
Kourosh Entekhabi and I played our singles match on Friday in the hot sun at GC Sussenbrunn. Kourosh made it interesting with a couple Tom Watsons toward the end, but he basically dominated – I think he fired a net 66, including his first birdie – to take the match 2 and 1. Congrats Kourosh and thanks for a fun evening!

B. Shahandeh vs J. Hopponen (3&2)
Brunn, Saturday 30 June - Behrouz parred the 16th hole to record a 3&2 victory against Jody on a scorching hot day with temperatures reaching 35 degrees.
Jody had started strongly going two-up by winning the first two holes. Behrouz pulled one back with a par on the third. The match then went into a tight phase as the two players matched each other's scores and thus the score remained one-up for Jody until the eighth hole. Notable was Jody's bogey on the seventh as from a most difficult position, he threaded a superb second shot to the centre of the fairway which subsequently enabled him to half the hole.

However, Behrouz, playing steady golf, capitalized on a mini-slump by Jody to surge ahead going two-up by winning the 8th, 9th and the 10th holes. After halving the next two holes, Behrouz increased his lead to three by winning the 13th. But Jody struck back immediately winning the 14th. The par-three 15th was halved and the match moved to the par-four 16th. Jody produced another miraculous stroke as his second shot from among the trees ended up only two metres from the green giving him a chance to extend the match. Behrouz had, in the meantime, reached the green in two with a smooth 8-iron after a long drive which had split the fairway. But Jody's usually reliable touch around the green deserted him as he could only manage a bogey. Behrouz's two-put par was thus good enough to seal the win 3&2 after a spectacular display of very steady golf my the "Meister" himself (e.g. 16 of 18 drives were on or close to the short grass, or on or near the green on the par 3s).

The match was played in a friendly, competitive and enjoyable atmosphere in spite of the heat. The beers sure tasted good at the 19th hole.

B. Bush vs P. Zhachry
Pete and Bill started their match at GC Brunn on a hot, very hot Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, they had a bit of breeze to ease the scorching rays of the sun. Pete had a slow start allowing Bill to go to up after two, but Pete fought back to be one up after eight. The match went all square at the turn. They were all square after twelve, the match being fought equally well by the sweating players. They were also all square on girlies. Pete took advantage of Bill’s girlie to go one up after thirteen.  On fourteen while putting in a hail storm (yes the weather took a turn for the worse) Bill missed a short put allowing Pete to go two up with four to play. Pete and Bill stood in pouring, torrential rain for fifteen minutes before teeing of on fifteen. Unfortunately, Pete left his umbrella in the car and struggled to keep his grips and hands dry. The result was Pete’s grip twisted as he swung resulting in duck hooks and power slices. Bill took advantage having dry gloves and grips to win two up. Commiserations to Pete for having left a dry umbrella in the car. Of course, we both birdied the nineteenth several times
